Contradictions in supervision, for me, are between the supervisor and the student. Most of the time the supervisor behaves as if he/she is doing a favour that must be compensated to him or her in a form of payment. This diverts the whole purpose of research supervision. Also, gender-wise between supervisor and student, if the supervisor is male and the student is female, the chances of a student being abused, belittled and undermined are high.
on governance and education, I think the government especially SA is not doing enough to fund the research projects and also initiate some research areas for funding. This leaves the student in limbo. lack of knowledge economy is another issue to be considered while supervising students.
in SA most of the things are politicised, some students do not take the supervisor’s comments nicely and they mistake them to be rude. when politics interfere in the education of the student in a bad way it becomes a problem.
