My MoUs with students are tacit. Some international students that come to us are sponsored by their governments. There is a requirement that the supervisor and, by extension, the university give written progress reports to the sponsor. I have not supervised any such student.

The project management and postgraduate thesis writing relationship in exciting. It however assumes a seamless system where the student, their sponsors/resources, supervisor and institution work together and understand the specific situations the operate in. more often a lot of factors such as student funding and working situations are not in harmony. As a supervisor I normally make arrangements with individual students depending of their situations and work time demands. It depends however on whether a student is institutionally funded, self-sponsored, working fulltime elsewhere, or an international student. I am however flexible, and we discuss with individual students alongside my co-supervisor to harmonize our schedules. Here in Kenya the number of students one can supervise is already defined by the Commission for Education (CUE) but shortage of graduate faculty at demands that one goes beyond the set limits.

    Handle deadlines:
    a) I sometimes overbook my diary
    b) I get stressed if I am going to miss a deadline
    c) I meet work related deadlines, however at the cost of personal deadlines such as finalising a manuscript for a journal.

    Plan your time:
Normally good at doing so. However,
    a) I find it difficult to balance my time between my teaching responsibilities and other academic responsibilities
    b) I get stressed if I am behind in my work
Using a diary is useful and critical to organising my time and appointments.
Adhere to compliance requirements: Fine with handling this.
Deal with variances in time management: Struggle with this but manage to cope. Can cope well if my diary is not too full.

The project management and time planning phase is a very critical aspect of the supervisory journey. The planning of the project can also reveal potential vulnerabilities which could determine the course of the project. This phase can bring to the fore, associated interventions needed to navigate project hurdles. Supervisors and research students need to pay careful attention to aligning the expectations of the project in ways which the personal and career development of students is not undermined by project deliverables and timelines.

The PP was very helpful Colette, thank you.
