A scholar is an academician with expertise and knowledge in a specific field. Scholarship has two meanings .It means learning; knowledge acquired by study; the academic attainments of a scholar ( Collins English Dictionary). It also means a sum of money or other aid granted to a student because of8 merit or need. IN the current context it means learning or knowledge acquired through study.
To be active in the academic community one has to be active in research, student supervision, teaching and presenting papers at research conferences.
students can be introduced to the academic community by assisting them to prepare papers for publication, identifying journals to publish their work, and presenting papers at conferences.
academic jealousies are ever present in our learning institutions. IN our institution it is prevalent during the times when students are either presenting their proposals or theses. If colleagues do not like the supervisor they can fail the student. This is not good practice since students do not get constructive feedback to assist them improve their work.A scholar is a learned person. A person who is an expert as a result of acquiring knowledge and skill in research. In this case a PhD student who has just completed his/ her doctorate is a scholar.
Scholarship is an expert in the field of research and has knowledge, experience and skill in doing research. In this case, the supervisor, who is an active researcher have scholarship skill which enable him/her to guide and mentor the PhD student.A scholar is a learned person. It also means working well with fellow supervisors by doing research together.
The student should be introduced to the academic commmunity by making him/her participate in research, i.e, to become research asssisstant, also to analyse data, to review literature and to publish their work.
To be active in academic community is to be be in continuous engagement with the evolving scholarly debates on relevant themes, disciplines and topics, amongst others. For me, ‘engagement’ is the keyword in this process, as it implies not being a mere passive recipient of information or scholarly works. But to actively engage, evaluate, assess and critique any of the new works. This not only brings the researcher within the fold of an academic network who are in constant conversation about topics and themes, but also adds to the knowledge of self.
However, this engagement, especially in the form of critical reading of new scholarly works, might also give rise of academic jealousies. Though I have not experienced such jealousies, I have observed such engagements between scholars.
Have you had experience of academic jealousies? What were the effects and was it resolved? How can you contribute to a more respectful and generous support network?
This question sparked interest within me! Just like any other life aspect or career, academia is a very competitive niche. Therefore, jealousy is bound to be present. Also, sometimes conflict may result due to competition within the field, departments etc. These may lead to jealousy and undermining of work by others. I believe competition is necessary for growth and interrogation and challenging work can brew quality. However, arguments must be delivered respectfully and boundaries clear. The control of arguments etc may be moderated by an assigned skilled mediator which avoids dialogues but creates a platform for more people to contribute.
A scholar is a specialist in a particular area of study, highly educated, an expert who can be consulted.
Scholarship means financial support granted by an institution, country, donor to a student to his/her education/studiesA scholar is anyone in the academic community who is constantly engaged in intellectual enquiry and knowledge production in a specific field of research. A scholar is usually someone who is vested in expanding the frontiers of knowledge. Scholarship on the other hand, is the process of engagement for the production of new knowledge. The word scholarship also applies to the funding support or grants provided for individuals who are interested in becoming scholars in a specific academic discipline.
In my view a post graduate support network may inform them of available scholarships in their field of study, intorduce them to scholars in their field of study and assist them in accessing relevant literature and journals in their field of study. They may also assist them in joining relevant societies in their field of study.
This support network can be built by being an active researcher in your field, attending conferences and workshops in related fields of study where you are likely to meet other scholars. One also needs to be conversant with new approaches in their fields and review for relevant journals.
A Scholar is a specialist in a particular field who can embrace the multidisciplinary views
Scholarship to me means learning
Postgraduate students need to know that they are part of the academic community. this can be achieved through inclusion in research projects and allowing them to tutor in areas of specialization, attending seminars/workshops and conferences.
Support networks provide opportunities and links for exchange and joint projects/research/writing
Having an open mind and accepting that learning is a continuous process is one way I deal with academic jealousyA scholar is someone who is highly educated and has become a specialist in his area of study. He is well versed with the respective field and is abreast with any emerging issues in the same as he continues reading, researching and creating new knowledge.
A scholarship is a form of financial aid to help in furthering education. For one to be active in academic community, it refers to one teaching in universities on exchange programme, supervising students from different institutions, examining thesis for students in different universities, collaborations in research, publishing, reviewing publications, and making presentations in conferences.
Scholar – a learner
Scholarship – grants, funds, money used to suport one to learn in a given thematic areaA scholar is an academician with knowledge in a particular area which he/she shares with the public.
Being active in academic field means looking into current community needs and researching into solutions to the current problems.
Students can be introduced into the community by the supervisor or by themselves from what they have learnt so far.
I have not experience supervision jealousy. How can supervisors shape supervisees into scholarly community. Autonomy is a construct of capacity. A student must be capable to make informed decisions about his/her learning. By involving reflective techniques such as journals or logs, students can become more knowledgeable about their processes. Autonomy involves a willingness on the part of the learner to take responsibility for their own learning. e learner must have a positive attitude towards taking on more responsibility for her/his learning.
A scholar is an academic, highly educated, and avid reader who seeks to find new information. A scholarship is funding granted to highly deserving students to study at any university in the world.
To be active in the academic institution is to always engage in studying and researching. student needs to be encouraged to do research because research enables students to read all the time, and this is part of the supervision program.
The postgraduate supervisor must support the student by showing them the relevant materials to read, relevant topics to embark on while researching and provide the links for a scholarship, such a network can be built through stakeholder workshops and engagement with the government and private institutions.Academic kingdom as I call it is a more independent kingdom where jealousy exists but with no effect because every person work in their own pace.
Being active in an academic community entails taking part and being involved regionally and internationally in forums around ones area of interest and research.
This could include taking part in organizing conferences, meetups, opinion papers, workshops, among others. It really means being a voice within the research community. How can you introduce your students into this community? By encouraging students to take part in events revolving around the research area e.g. volunteering in organization, peer reviewing, especially in the era of online events, one can get involved and participate without having to spend much.
Is this part of the role of the supervisor? Yes I think part of being a supervisor is introducing ones students to the research community and what it means to be active in search a community. -
