In my view, a scholar is one that constantly seek an understanding of societal phenomena by engaging the existing ontological positions and various perspectives and also methodological/epistemological approaches used to understand phenomena to advance a new one or a better understanding. Thus, scholars understand and consider the ethics in knowledge production, including its possible implications or impact to the source of information/knowledge (the participants of the research or the people) and their situation/context and the society in general. Scholars, therefore, through their knowledge production, could become catalysts for the advancement of societal change or transformation. Hence, scholarship is also activism. Scholar-activism would create an impact to peoples lives or towards a betterment of the society.

A scholar is a person with vast and immense knowledge on a specific area. As for a scholarship, this is a grant that is given to a scholar to give him or her an opportunity to expound their knowledge base. It can be monitory or non-monitory but the scholar is exempted from paying part or complete amount of money in order to gain more knowledge.

An active member of an academic community means that an individual contributes knowledge to the community through continuous research, publications, presentations in conferences and also mentoring young and upcoming researchers.

I think a scholar is an academic who is actively engaged with academic issues and questions in so far as they touch lived experiences. These lived experiences manifest themselves in different ways. First, they could be expressed in terms of practical human challenges that constantly demand for solutions. Secondly, they can also express themselves through research problems that arise from ever emerging knowledge gaps. Thus, a scholar is one who finds oneself actively engaged at all these levels.

In the same way therefore, scholarship is about a deeply felt unquenchable thirst or urge to constantly open up epistemic frontiers in and through the two stated level.

A Scholar is someone in the academia who devotedly and actively pursues research activities and shares findings through publications. A scholar is also involved in supervising students at different levels of learning. A scholarship is a kind of financial support given to a student to pursue their studies and/or research activities.

To be active in an academic community means being a member of an academic community where one shares their research findings, and shares concerns in the field as well as contributing to members’ discussions.

I can introduce my students to the academic community by making them aware of such forums and the benefits. Yes, supervisors play a great role in the awareness.
A PG supervisor’s network can provide information on current research activities and scientific breakthroughs. This network can be built by introducing members and contributions to the discussions.

I have not experienced any academic jealousies.

I think inducting students into the academic community means not just ensuring that they are engaging with literature, but also have the opportunity to actually meet the researchers behind the publications. We are lucky in that we have a national society (the Society of South African Geographers) that is quite active. It hosts annual student conferences, a biennial conference, annual writing workshops and an SNP (Students and New Professionals) group that organises a lot of supportive workshops, events and so on. This means that a student can be directed to these groups and activities so that, even though they are isolated in a small university and department, they can make these connections.

To me research visit to other laboratories as an experimentalist provide me with opportunity to enter academic community. It provides a benchmark as well as motivation that one is on the right track in terms of research and supervision. We can do research in islands but must collaborate with other like minded individuals ensuring complete growth and steadiness to keeping focus.

Scholar means to me to be professional/educated in a certain field/discipline. Further to publish in that field, to attend conferences and have the knowledge on how to get relevant information for different literacies needed.

To be active in an academic community means being a member of an entity eg COMBER where one shares their research findings, and shares concerns/challenges and also the latest trends in the field as well as contribute to members’ discussions.

On my view, a scholar is variety of forms to engage with the academic practice and to be active in an academic community could be to constantly be updated on the most recent publications, discussions, etc.; to attend meetings and events such as conferences, book presentations, congress; to be part of associations, boards, etc.

I find important to introduce students to the academic community by putting them in contact with people with similar research interests, guiding them to find relevant literacy sources, publishing journals, etc. I think in that way the students are guided to create their own networks and support each other.

Regarding academic jealousies, I have no experience on the subject.

A scholar is one that has excelled in a given scientific field.

Being active in the academic community means publishing and being peer-reviewed as well as reviewing others and reading and critiquing peers. Also collaborating in research and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Making citations of other scholars’ academic works.

Students can be introduced to the academic community through colloquiums, workshops, and seminars.

A supervisor support network can provide reading material support and scholarship funding networks as well as project research funding. Such networks can be built through joint projects, conferences, and research work.

I have encountered academic jealousy which has not been resolved to date. I can contribute to a generous support network through proposal writing, sharing information on calls, and supervision of post-graduate students.

A scholar is a person who is up to date with the new knowledge in his/her area of specialisation and is always reading and researching to contribute new knowledge.
To be an active member of academic community in my view one has to attend conferences and often present their research work, attend seminars and disseminate new knowledge generated through publishing research articles. He/ she is also involved in writing research proposals to fund research projects. The research proposals can be collaborative with various field of research. As a supervisor I have the role to introduce my student to the academic community by ensuring that they join academic research groups such as research gate where they can be able to follow those doing research in similar which could give them more insights into their work. I would also encourage them to attend seminars and conferences as well as present their work in these forums. Other than that as they begin their studies I would make sure they are aware of the online libraries and physical library for reviewing literature. I would also enjoin them to proposal writing for research funding.
I haven’t experienced academic jealousy personally but this is very common in the universities, I have seen it happen. This is mainly brought about by promotions, research funding and supervision of students. The issue can be deep but may be very difficult to suggest a clear way of solving it.

To me, a scholar is someone who is actively involved in the processes of knowledge creation in a way that benefits the community. Scholarship involves identifying problems and using pre-existing work to guide you to solutions in the practical sense. In order to contribute new knowledge, it is essential for the scholar to engage the academic community. This helps widen one’s perspective of the world, which is important when one wants to address a problem in a holistic manner. Being active in the academic community means engaging with new knowledge and always trying to find ways of enhancing/improving existing knowledge. I think an active academic is one who engages the community (both social and academic) in the quest to address the community’s current and anticipated challenges.

To be active in an academic community means to engage in activities that further your career as an academician and interact with fellow scholars. The activities include research, publications, attending conferences, engaging the public about your area of specialisation through public lectures, supervising graduate students and reviewing journal manuscripts for publication.

A scholar is someone who writes and influences debate, based on new knowledge and subject matter authority.

Active in academic community means doing research and being able to share it in platforms mainly of fellow researchers, professors- with the aim of modeling new research gaps or even discussing how results can be adopted in community. It should have constructive criticism with need to improve presentations, methodologies used in research.

Students can be introduced through co-authorships, helping to supervise students, encouraging them to publish in high impact journals and not surpressing their opinions. The student can be introduced to an existing supervisors network of academics, researchers- for instance can initially help to edit paper submissions, host websites….

I have heard of academic Jealousy. Its counter productive. This happens when some people are academically progressive and others are stagnant, and the ‘others’ are senior or well placed in ranks. This frustrates efforts to progress furthur.

I though a scholar is related to a scholarship/fellowship at times!

    Thanks for clarification Kandie

A scholar is someone who is engaged in knowledge production or an expertise on a subject. To be engaged in an academic community is to be part of knowledge creation and transfer this knowledge to others via lectures, supervision, publications, etc.
