The PhD assessment is rigorous and elaborate. It welcomes the student to the world of academic rigor. At Maseno University, we have generally agreed to have Faculty defenses before the final defense at the School of Graduate Studies of Maseno University Publications from Thesis chapters compound the quality of students’ theses. Independent evaluators at a pe-defense level if adopted, could add value as well.

As a supervisor, the role becomes messy when the student seems not to be making progress. At this point, a supervisor changes his or her role into a coach in order to probe progress and journey for long academic mentorship becomes interlocked within this process.

Inititial stages of the background to a research question and subsequent literature review tend to tempt students to plagiarise works of authorities. Maybe they act this way as a way to complete their proposals in the shortest time ever! Eventually, the drama begins when their work is Turnitin and they have to re-write what is plagiarred. Students need to re-learn the basic values and virtues of honesty and truthfulness since at master’s and PhD levels, their work is ostensibly independent.

A scholar is one that has excelled in a given scientific field.

Being active in the academic community means publishing and being peer-reviewed as well as reviewing others and reading and critiquing peers. Also collaborating in research and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Making citations of other scholars’ academic works.

Students can be introduced to the academic community through colloquiums, workshops, and seminars.

A supervisor support network can provide reading material support and scholarship funding networks as well as project research funding. Such networks can be built through joint projects, conferences, and research work.

I have encountered academic jealousy which has not been resolved to date. I can contribute to a generous support network through proposal writing, sharing information on calls, and supervision of post-graduate students.

In Kenya, the Commission for University Education formulates University Standards and Guidelines
Further, Kenya National Qualification Authority formulates the Framework. These documents contain broad guidelines on University operations and Qualification accreditation.
