    Coaching and mentoring are different, they are however used interchangeably in most cases because there has been a lack of understanding of what each constitutes. From this course, today I have learned the differences between the two. A majority of senior researchers are either too mean or are not just willing to mentor the upcoming scholar. It is mind-boggling when a young researcher tries to get a connection with the senior researcher and the end result is obstacles along the way that is kind of frustrating and the young scholar gives up.

    Wonderful presentation. I feel the issue of ethics cuts across disciplines and it is very difficult to convince the scientific community about your findings without showing proof of adherence to research ethics.

    I mentor my students and it is mandatory to have ethical clearance issued by various accredited ethics review committees. This how to nurture upcoming scholars. My institution has an ethics committee and their work is superb.

    It is worth reflecting on the disciplinary approaches and knowing where I am grounded. I like the horizontal knowledge structure and the social constructivist view which gives the participants avenue for voicing their concerns

    A scholar is one who is up to date with information in his/her area(s) of expertise. Personally, scholarship is not just about being up-to-date, it means being competent in my discipline too. Therefore, being active in the academic community involve generating new knowledge through research and sharing the findings with different audiences through publications. It also involves attending conferences and giving academic public lectures with an aim of passing knowledge to the ‘other’ generation of upcoming scholars.
    Yes, as a supervisor I can introduce my willing student to the academic community as part of the mentorship process. Academic Jealousy Yes, I experienced this when pursuing my PhD, some comments from friends sounded so jealous but this never derailed my journey to pursue my dream to the end.

    In Kenya, the standards and guidelines for postgraduate studies are formulated by the universities and later submitted to the Commission for University Education (CUE) which then standardizes the University Standards. CUE also acts as the quality assurance agency that ensures both private and public universities have almost equal and same standards and guidelines for postgraduate studies.

    Team supervision sounds perfect. However, universities have varying post-graduate supervision regulations. Personally, I am a product of co-supervision and it is a good way of mentoring novice supervisors too.
