in reply to: Module 4, Session 3: Coaching and Mentoring #3012
Thank you for the presentation. It was real eye-opener on mentoring and coaching concepts.
It may not be possible both for supervisors and students, always, to go beyond coaching and to build lifetime relationship. Even so, at least, there needs an environment that maintains mutual trust, respect, and mutual benefits in every supervision process.
Also, we should always keep in mind that if a research relationship fails, the PG students as novice researchers seems to be affected negatively more (while saying this, I am assuming supervisors are more resilient to fail than a student)! Therefore, as supervisors, we think to apply every method that help to increase likelihood of our PG students, while also give information to the students about the challenges we face in our relationships.

(thank you all)I am grateful for such an insightful presentation,
There may always exist some implicit roles in every process for all participants of a process including supervision. Making such implicit knowledge, that is difficult to transfer to another people, explicit is a key contribution, since we always need concepts to deal with challenges we face.
Beyond providing practical solution sets, this presentation highlighted for me one more time the importance ofeffective communicationsamong student, supervisor and committee members
(thank you all)-

in reply to: Module 4, Session 1: Ethics in Research #2962In my field, in economics, the subject matter of the research varies including human behavior to firm decisions to government policies, to name a few. Therefore, ethical issues vary as well.
Various software tools are available for the use of lecturers/supervisors to detect plagiarism and measure its level. But pre-research guidance and training of students on ethical issues are really rare.
Proper efforts to equip students with the responsibility of academic integrity including plagiarism from the very beginning of university education are must for students to be more aware of their academic obligations to undertake research in ethical ways throughout their whole academic life(I haven’t needed it for my personal research, but as far as I know)at my institution, the approval of ethics review committee is required at the research proposal stage if the research necessitate an ethical clearance. However, it is not checked for every proposal whether an ethics approval required or not. This also relies on the judgement of research proposal committee.

I keep reading journals for my own writing, particularly, at the pre-writing stage. I always find it useful, but most of the time my reading list at the outset continue to expand after I start to read, so it usually takes more time to finish my reading lists than I expected at the beginning. Keeping such journals help me a lot to develop my own voice and to craft my arguments.
Presence of a Writing Center at institutional-level would be really helpful for a postgraduate student to get some writing supports in case of need before sending her work to the supervisor. This would minimize the efforts that a supervisor needs to devote surface-level corrections. Also, such a separate center may enable better convey of norms and values in every research fields.
