in reply to: Module 4, Session 3: Coaching and Mentoring #5749
I think both coaching and mentoring are important in the supervision process. The two elements will support the PhD student in their process of having enough support, guidance but also in their process of achieving the milestones of the PhD. As a PhD student right now I see how I do not only need emotional and academic support, but also encouragement in achieving my goals and feeling ok with my performance.
in reply to: Module 4, Session 1: Ethics in Research #5748It was interesting to see what are the main ethical issues to consider on life sciences. I think in social sciences there is a broader spectrum of ethical considerations. A very important concept in my field of development studies is ‘informed and ongoing consent’. It makes reference that it is not enough that people give their consent at the beginning of the research but that their consent needs to be given through all the stages of the fieldwork and to make explicit their right to no longer participate in the research. It also contemplates that people should be properly informed of all the implications that their participation in the research might take.
in reply to: Module 3, Session 3: Research approach and design #5636I think the worldview and the research approach are the foundation upon everything else is to be developed. I think this main point we will also lead to ask certain questions and to choose the methods. I consider essential to take the time to reflect on these points before starting an investigation and also to encourage these reflections in the students with whom we work.
in reply to: Module 3, Session 3: Disciplinary differences #5634I really like the ppt and the explanation about disciplinary differences. It was specially insightful for me to know more about the disciplinary knowledge structure and the different world views. I think is really important to keep in mind these reflections through the supervisory practice
I think the reflection proposed by the ppt is highly relevant. I agree that higher emphasis should be to analyze the expectations are set. However, I think another main important main to think further is what is humanizing pedagogy and what are their main components.
in reply to: Module 1, Session 4: National Policies #5632In Mexico, the institution that regulates Higher Education is the Public Education Secretariat. They issue the Norms and Regulations for Higher Education that includes the rules for getting a PhD.
On my view, a scholar is variety of forms to engage with the academic practice and to be active in an academic community could be to constantly be updated on the most recent publications, discussions, etc.; to attend meetings and events such as conferences, book presentations, congress; to be part of associations, boards, etc.
I find important to introduce students to the academic community by putting them in contact with people with similar research interests, guiding them to find relevant literacy sources, publishing journals, etc. I think in that way the students are guided to create their own networks and support each other.
Regarding academic jealousies, I have no experience on the subject.
I find very important the idea of keeping a reading journal. I think there can be several ways of keeping the journal that adapt to different personalities and ways of working. But definitely, it helps to identify the most relevant authors and ideas for your research and you can constantly review and go back to the main ideas.
in reply to: Module 2, Session 4: EPE resources’ assessment #5629I found the website Enhancing Postgraduate Environments to be a very interesting collection of resources for engaging with the supervision task at different levels. I think it was great that the resources are organized by stages and was amazing to see all the diversity of resources in every one of them. Definitely is a page to visit constantly to enhance your supervision practice.
