I haven’t used a reading journal before and it will be interesting to keep one from now going forward. It is a great idea.
Reading journal is an important area for a supervisor and supervisee. This is important because as a supervisor I am able to guide my post graduate student to develop a reading culture and to be able to easily review literature. It will help them and me to learn about how to be original, avoiding plagiarism by summarizing key points in their/my own words after reading a journal. This will lead to creation of new knowledge.
I love using a reading journal. This is where I use a free style of writing, creating ideas and how certain components fit together.
Is it also where I can write how I feel about any topic, and link it to articles etc.
I tend to forget about my reading journal but will use it again to state my AHA moments or anything new I have learned or discovered.I keep a reading journal however this session has given me insight on how to improve on my reading. Before this session, i have been taking notes as I read and I have realised that this does not allow me to analyze the important information im getting. I hope to practice this more often and pass this knowledge to my postgraduate students.
I found the writing takes up too much time and limits how much I can read, which doesn’t work for me as my research intersects on many topic in music.
I find the idea of keeping a reading journal interesting. Before I would read a paper and write the key things/takeaways that relate to the work that I was doing and mark as complete or for further reading. This helped in keeping track of important information regarding what I had read. The exercise on keeping a journal is quite useful for postgraduate students.
