In Kenya, the Commission for University Education regulates University education at all levels. In some disciplines such as medicine and Pharmacy, they do this in consultation with the regulatory boards such as the Kenya Medical and Dentist Board and the Pharmacy and Poisons Board as the key stakeholders who set the requirements.

In Kenya we have the National Commission for Science and Technology and Innovation which is responsible for authorizing research. The National Policy on Post Graduate Research and Training in Kenya is equally important.

I am aware of the Commission for University Education in Kenya however I have learnt that there are more policies from this forum. This platform is quite helpful in creating awareness.

I agree with the above statements relating with the Kenyan situation. Briefly, we have the Commission for University Education that is mandated to formulate the standards and guidelines for all universities. They normally follow up to ensure that this is well implemented by the institutions. In addition, there is also the Kenya National Qualification Authority that formulates the qualification guidelines.
Apart from national policies, institutional guidelines are also available to provide a framework for postgraduate studies.

In agreement with the sharing about Kenya. Just to emphasize that postgraduate education is highly regulated by institutional policies developed in line with the CUE guidelines.

Before this course, I never paid much attention to what policy says about postgraduate studies in South Africa. The only knowledge I have is derived from our University guidelines for postgraduate studies. But I am now interested in what policy says about funding, especially on funding black women in academia. This is really a topic close to my heart as I feel that there is often big talk about the increasing number of black women in academia yet there are challenges of funding and employment post graduation. I leaves me wondering if the purpose of such policies is to just increase numbers or are they genuinely committed to addressing inequalities that go beyond “bums on seats”. Definitely going to have to do some more readings on this to gain better insight.

In Kenya, the policy documents include:
    1. Commission for University Education: Universities Standards and Guidelines 2014.
    2. The Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF).

The Commission for University Education Universities Standards and Guidelines 2014 states that “a charter shall be the full accreditation status of any University in Kenya.” The KNQF is “constituted of principles and guidelines by which records of learner achievement are registered to enable national recognition of acquired skills and knowledge thereby ensuring an integrated system that encourages life-long learning.”

In Kenya, the standards and guidelines for postgraduate studies are formulated by the universities and later submitted to the Commission for University Education (CUE) which then standardizes the University Standards. CUE also acts as the quality assurance agency that ensures both private and public universities have almost equal and same standards and guidelines for postgraduate studies.

I agree with my colleagues on the Kenyan situation. At the national level for universities education CUE is the body mandated to deal with university education. The other bodies deal with other levels and sectors such as technical education.(The Kenya National Qualifications framework). At the institutional levels several documents exists dealing with the same issue but domiciled in different departments/schools and directorates.
In Kenya the existence of several documents and bodies that deal with specific sectors of university education and especially postgraduate brings confusion to the sector. There is need for the documents to be domiciled in one place for easy access and to improve standards and avoid duplication.

Being relatively new to the academic space, I do not really know about the national policies that guide postgraduate education. I am hoping by the end of this module (or course) I would have acquired the knowledge and understanding of these policies and guidelines.

In Mexico, the institution that regulates Higher Education is the Public Education Secretariat. They issue the Norms and Regulations for Higher Education that includes the rules for getting a PhD.

In Kenya, the Commission for University Education formulates University Standards and Guidelines
Further, Kenya National Qualification Authority formulates the Framework. These documents contain broad guidelines on University operations and Qualification accreditation.

The key national documents that guide standards and processes around post graduate education in Kenya are:
