Module 1: Session 3 (RU Team Forum)

Please consider this Narrated Powerpoint/MP4 and discuss what this implies for the development and planning of your summer school in the team meeting.

The COVID-19 crisis has “forced” many summer schools to move to an online format. This has negative implications, for example lack of engagement, but it also enhances chances of participation and inclusivity. Whilst the CPC proposal suggested the development of live summer schools, the online dimension needs to be included in this development phase.

Please consider the two assignments with your team. Select the format most applicable for implementation at your institution and try to answer the questions accordingly.

    Option 1
    Organising Academic Summer Term:
    First Step
It will be to design the course and structure it according to the number of days that it will require . How will the registration be done, (like will it be online, or students will have to physically come to the administrator’s office for registration, how will one pay if the will be any payment for the course etc)

Then send a call for applications for the facilitators who will be interested to facilitate the course with the skills that are required to facilitate the course.

Once the facilitators are secured and they agree to the remuneration offered next step is to advertise the course in all platforms of the targeted participants.

    Course Offering:
    1. Online Delivery of the course: Should the course starts while we are still on pandemic and unable to deliver a face to face facilitation . A user friendly site will need to be created where participants can navigate easily between the materials, times of contact session online will need to be thoroughly think through so as to accommodate all the participants who are keen to be part of the course.
Due to the fact that the costs for travelling and accommodation are limited need to consider the access to internet or Wi-Fi for the participants and the facilitators.

    2. Face to Face : This may impact the costs of the course as the expenses will be more, like travelling costs, venue hire etc . when doing the budget this will need to be revised so that the cost per participant is more . Then maybe the course material should be printed at this point.
    3. Hybrid Structure: this option may need to be done in two groups and may be time consuming due to the fact that those participants who are on

All three options will require human resources in order to be able to run smoothly, the administrator who will take care of sending calls for applications for the facilitators and participants, to keep track of the participants, budgets etc, and then facilitators either online or physical contact who will run the courses and do the marking.

It is possible to facilitate all three options depending on the pandemic on which will best work under the circumstances though they all have different financial implications to the costs of the course.
